Keep Planning for the Future

Two Farmers

This past month has ushered in a new reality with the COVID-19 pandemic. We are living in unprecedented times, existing in a mode that focuses only on today and dealing with the here and now.  With that, it is easy to put off planning for the future.  This should be resisted, especially when it comes to your farm’s business and estate planning needs.

I’m reminded of the words of hockey legend Wayne “The Great One” Gretzky when asked about his key to success in hockey.  He said, “A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be.”   This is good advice, especially in times like this.  Planning for your farm’s future is “playing where the puck is going to be.”  Are you doing this?

The absence of planning can lead to a reality where opportunities are no longer available.  Is an opportunity to transition the farm to the next generation lost due to inaction today?   How about retirement on your terms?  What about the lack of planning for a death or disability?  How does that leave those whom you leave behind?  Not good.  These are grim thoughts, but they are realities that need attention.  Planning for the future is a must.
